As usual at this time of year the shops are beginning to fill up with their autumn ranges, and while for true fashion fanatics this is a really exciting time, for those who aren’t quite sure what they should be wearing this season it can be a minefield.
So many pictures, so many statements such as ‘purple is the new black’, ‘black is the new black’ and ‘over-the-knee-boots are your next ‘must-have’ buy’ only make life even more confusing, in my opinion. There are some things many of us would love to buy, if we only could; (that purple Mulberry python snakeskin bag, for example or Alexander McQueen’s cashmere jacket) some pieces that are just plain daft (no let’s not go there) and others that fit seamlessly into our wardrobes and lifestyles that are seriously worth considering right now.
Quite simply if you’re going to bring some new colour to your wardrobe let it be purple, aubergine, plum or any one of the gorgeous deep jewel colours around. Make sure you have at least one fabulous little black dress to call on (and if you don’t, make that trip to buy one) and wear it with strong statement heels.
Military style jackets are everywhere – if you want to, go for it, and likewise with plaid although my advice is not to take either look too far – you’re bound to tire of it. Look for details such as fringing, jewel embellishment on shoes, paisley prints and checks and if you don’t already have some larger than life bling in your jewellery box from the last time around take a look at Butler and Wilson, Net-a-Porter or Mikey and you’re bound to find a statement piece to fall in love with.
Finally, there is a great deal to choose from, as usual, at the start of the autumn/winter season. Keep to your own style and add in the pieces that make it all work together right now. Fashion victims beware!
